How to Hack vCenter Database in vCSA Appliance

As @lamw documented in his blog, you can access the database in the vCenter software appliance (vCSA). In the first appliance of version 5.0, VMware included IBM DB2 Embedded and then switched to vPostgres right after. That’s because vPostgres is VMware’s own product based on the open source Postgres.

By default, the access to the vPostgress database is limited to local applications. In other words, if you want to access the database remotely, it will not work. After researching a little, I figured out how to configure the databse for remote access.

GUI Libraries for Angular Javascript Framework

Angular is a fantastic JavaScript framework that simplifies the MVC for Web applications. Like jQuery, it does not come with a library of GUI widgets and CSS themes – it just does what it’s supposed to do and does it well. If you are a developer, you would most likely need a GUI library to build a modern and interactive Web GUI. That is why I spent a bit time to research on this.

A Quick Hack With vSphere Web Client Timeout

Last week I released a tiny tool called DoubleCloud Client, which eases the usage of vSphere Web Client. I didn’t have time to add another hack which can bypass the session timeout of vSphere Web Client.

By default, vSphere Web Client times out after 30 minutes of inactivity according to VMware Doc. After timing out, you got to re-login and click back to the page you left out. It’s good for the security, but also not convenient. If you use it on your own desktop and have set up screen saver with password protection, you don’t really need this security feature.

A Tiny Tool to Ease the Use of VMware vSphere Web Client

In my previous article, I talked about why Web is not a good choice as the primary GUI for vSphere. I also mentioned that I was working on Ua small app to enhance the user experience of vSphere Web Client.

Today I am happy to announce a small application I developed recently using latest Visual Studio 2012 Express which is free from Microsoft. Although known with my work on Java in the community, I am pretty open to any programming languages and tools that are best to get work done. This time it happens to be C# and .NET. :-)

GUI Front End for Hadoop

I went to LinkedIn last Wednesday for a tech talk by UC Berkeley professor Joseph Hellerstein on Programming for Distributed Consistency: CALM and Bloom. This is indeed a highly specialized topic, so I am not going to talk about the details. Should you be interested in the new programming language Bloom, you can check the web site (http://bloom-lang.org).
