VMDeployer 1.8 Released: Full and Fast Datastore Browser Support

We released 1.7 before VMworld and then headed to Vegas for the conference. I gave a tech talk at the vBrownBag on the VMware APIs, especially the full vSphere REST APIs. We will release our vSphere REST APIs soon. Stay tuned. If you are interested in early access, please feel free to ping me.

On my way back from the VMworld, I continued to work on 1.8 which has yet another big feature: datastore browsers with full functionalities. You can browse all your datastores with full file operations like view, copy, move, delete, create a new folder. You can also download and upload a file from/to a datastore. Since it’s a standalone application, you know it’s much faster than the Web applications like vSphere Web Client, or the HTML5 client. I am sure you will never look back after using this Java GUI.

Time to learn how to "Google" and manage your VMware and clouds in a fast and secure

HTML5 App

We also made a few other improvements on the deployment side. After you select an OVA or OVF file, you can now see more information about the hardware, system, etc. More importantly, you can convert an OVA to OVF, or the other way with a single button click. This can be handy when you want the other format, especially on Mac where I haven’t found a good GUI tool for that.

Last, but not the least, we reduced the size of the application down to 2.2M which is about 30% less from the 3.3M. Once it’s downloaded, you just double click on the jar. No installer is needed – simple just that.
