How to Work Around Netbeans Failure to Start on Mac

NetBean is a great IDE because it’s not only free but also rich in features and good in quality. Its cross platform support with Java Swing is pretty good. It’s been my IDE of choice for Java after Eclipse.

Recently I upgraded NetBeans 8.2 on Mac and it failed to start by double clicking on the icon from the desktop toolbar. Maybe I did not correctly remove the old version?

After researching a while, I found a bug report with following command line as work around for NetBeans 8.0.2:

/Applications/NetBeans/NetBeans\ 8.0.2.app/Contents/Resources/NetBeans/bin/netbeans

To make it work for 8.2, it’s actually pretty simple:

$ /Applications/NetBeans/NetBeans\ 8.2.app/Contents/Resources/NetBeans/bin/netbeans &

Don’t forget the & at the end of the command line, which make NetBeans process running in the back end. More often than not, you may use the same terminal again. Without &, you can easily terminate the NetBeans GUI without intention, just like what I did the first time.
