Free Java GUI to Deploy VMs onto vSphere of All Versions – A Solid and Fast Alternative to vSphere Web Client and ovftool

Recently we got quite a few complaints about installing vSearch appliance OVA onto vSphere 6.5 using the vSphere Web Client. It does not work. As a quick workaround, we told customers to try the VMware ovftool command line. While it works mostly, we still got questions and issues on the usage. For one thing, it’s not always straight-forward and easy to get the parameters right.

Disappointed by the vSphere Web Client which should have got it right upon release, we decided to write an installer for the vSearch appliance. Because the installer assumes only OVA or OVF format thus works with other OVA or OVF files, we think the community may benefit from this VM deployer  program. So we decide to share it with the community for free.

Time to learn how to "Google" and manage your VMware and clouds in a fast and secure

HTML5 App

The program is written in Java and no installer needed for itself. After you download the executable jar file, simply click on it (assuming you’ve got Java JRE installed. Given our technical audience I think I can make this assumption. If not, please leave a comment and I will add more instruction on that). You will see a window showing up like the following:

DoubleCloudVmDeployer
From the GUI, I think you’ve guessed out the high level features. But let’s reiterate them here:

1. Portable GUI that runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, and any other Java supported OSes.
2. Installs both OVA and OVF.
3. Works with both vCenter and ESXi of ALL the versions of vSphere (4.0, 4.1, 4.5, 5.0, 5.1, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5).
4. No manual typing of Folder, host, datastore, network, but picking from existing target. As result, no typo mistake can be made.
5. Fast deployment with our vSphere API expertise.
6. Light-weight with only 2.5MB in size.
